How to Get a DHA License: Step-by-Step Process
Quick Summary
Getting a DHA license involves six main steps: creating a Sheryan account, submitting documents, completing DataFlow verification, passing the Prometric exam, undergoing DHA evaluation, and receiving your license. Most applicants complete the process in 2-6 months.
The DHA licensing process is sequential -- each step must be completed before moving to the next. While some steps can overlap (for example, you can take the Prometric exam while waiting for DataFlow results), the overall flow follows a defined path. Below is a detailed breakdown of each stage.
Step 1: Create a Sheryan Account
Sheryan is the DHA's online licensing and compliance portal. All licensing activities, from initial application to renewal, are managed through this platform. To get started:
- Visit the official Sheryan portal through the DHA website
- Register as a healthcare professional (your employer may also initiate this on your behalf)
- Complete your profile with personal details, educational background, and professional history
- Upload a recent passport-sized photograph
In most cases, your sponsoring employer or healthcare facility in Dubai will create the initial application. You will then receive credentials to access and complete your portion of the application. If you do not yet have an employer in Dubai, you may still create an account to explore the requirements, but the formal application process typically requires employer sponsorship.
Step 2: Submit Your Documents
Once your Sheryan account is active, you need to upload all required documents. This typically includes your medical degree, specialty certificates, experience letters, good standing certificates, and passport copies. See our DHA License Requirements page for the full document list.
Key considerations at this stage:
- Ensure all documents are scanned clearly in PDF format
- Documents not in English or Arabic must include certified translations
- Your employer's licensing department can often assist with the upload process
- Double-check that your name is consistent across all documents
Step 3: DataFlow Verification
After document submission, the DHA will trigger a DataFlow Primary Source Verification (PSV). This is a mandatory step where an independent verification agency contacts the original issuing institutions to confirm that your documents are genuine.
DataFlow will verify:
- Your medical degree with the issuing university
- Your specialist qualifications with the training body or college
- Your employment history with previous employers
- Your good standing status with licensing authorities
This step is entirely out of your hands once initiated, but there are things you can do to help it along. Inform your previous institutions that a verification request is coming, and ensure your contact details at those institutions are up to date. For a detailed walkthrough, see our DataFlow Process page.
Step 4: Pass the Prometric Exam
The Prometric exam is a computer-based assessment of your medical knowledge. Most doctors applying for a DHA license are required to take this exam, although some exemptions exist for holders of certain internationally recognised qualifications.
To schedule and take the exam:
- Receive your eligibility letter from the DHA (issued through Sheryan after initial application review)
- Register with Prometric and select a test centre -- centres are available globally
- Pay the exam fee directly to Prometric
- Prepare using the DHA-recommended syllabus for your specialty
- Take the exam at your scheduled date and time
Results are typically available within a few days and are sent directly to the DHA. You can take the Prometric exam while your DataFlow verification is in progress -- this is a common strategy to save time. Visit our Prometric Exam section for comprehensive preparation guidance.
Step 5: DHA Evaluation
Once the DHA has your DataFlow verification report and Prometric exam results, your complete application goes through an evaluation process. During this stage, DHA assessors review your entire file and determine:
- Whether you meet all the criteria for the license category you applied for
- Your professional classification (GP, specialist, or consultant)
- Whether any additional steps are required (such as an oral assessment or clinical examination for certain specialties)
In some cases, the DHA may request additional documentation or clarification during this stage. Respond promptly to any such requests to avoid delays. If the DHA determines that you do not meet the requirements for the category you applied for, they may offer you a license under a different category or request additional evidence.
Step 6: License Issuance
Upon successful completion of all evaluation steps, the DHA issues your professional license electronically through the Sheryan portal. Your license will show:
- Your full name and professional title
- Your license category and specialty
- The licence number
- The validity period (typically two years)
- Your sponsoring facility
Once issued, you are legally permitted to practise medicine within Dubai in the capacity specified by your license. Your employer will typically handle the final administrative steps of linking your license to the facility.
